Name: Smith, Charles Morrill (b.1836-d.1899)

Historical Note: Captain Charles Morrill Smith was born about 1836 in Surry, Maine to Naham and Aphia Smith. He married Susan A. Young of Surrey on December 30, 1861. They had children Charles O. (1864-1875), Harry C. (1869-1953) and Lillian E. and lived in Ellsworth, Maine. In 1863, at age 25, he enrolled in the Fifth District of Maine.  Captain Smith was at sea most of his lifetime.  He sailed the Mary Lord (Three-mast schooner), Maid of Mist (Schooner) and the Charles A. Gilberg (Three-mast schooner). The Charles A. Gilberg was built for him in Columbia Falls and launched in 1890. Captain Smith died at sea on the Charles A. Gilberg (Schooner) on September 30, 1899 after contacting a fever in Savannah.  The vessel was on a voyage to Permambuco, Brazil.  Mrs. Smith died on February 18, 1914. Captain Smith is buried at Woodbine Cemetery, Lot 260, in Ellsworth, Maine next to his wife and children Charles O. and Harry C.
